A Creative New Twist on Firework Photography

Fireworks photography requires incredible talent, and challenges skilled artists to create something even more beautiful than the original visual display in the sky. Photographer David Johnson accepted that challenge during the International Fireworks Show in Ottawa, Canada, and found countless moments of inspiration across the sky.

The Canadian photographer turned these inspiring and colorful spectacles into something fresh and exciting. He explains his process: “I put the camera out of focus and would start an exposure when I could see the fireworks going up. Once they exploded, I quickly refocused the camera. This created an effect of blobbed/out of focus light that slowly converges into fine points!” The results are these abstract shapes and blobs of color that resemble deep sea creatures and gorgeous flower petals.
