Born and raised in Cape Town, Danielle Clough seems to draw on the country’s colourful natural flora to create her striking embroidery art. Making use of thick, bright threads, Clough weaves impressive flowery images and emotional portraits, as well as light-hearted emojis and animals. Substituting traditional frames, occasionally she spins her elaborate images on vintage tennis and badminton rackets.
Trained in art direction and graphic design in South Africa, Clough also dabbles in photography and music, does design work for a variety of companies, and stints on local radio shows. Her talent has been recognized within the country, and sometimes she is able to combine skills and create visuals for live music events. Though she is an artist with many different projects on the go, Clough’s needlework stands out, equal parts radiant and quirky. She has many more pieces on display on her Instagram page, and accepts commission-based work if a brightly threaded centrepiece is something your home is calling for.
Besides gorgeous floral designs on rackets, Clough also creates other nature-inspired portraits on traditional embroidery hoops.
