The Nam Et-Phou Louey Biodiversity Conservation Area in northern Laos, Vietnam could soon be the site of unique spherical eco-lodges that hang from the trees. These unconventional accommodations would allow visitors to observe and immerse themselves within the gorgeous landscape near the Nam Poung village. They’re part of a community-led design project by Cole Company, aimed at increasing eco-tourism and jobs for local villagers.
Structures like bird and insect nests inspired these suspended sleeping pods. The frames are secured via taut cables and attached to neighboring trees. They’re made of bamboo and timber, with a basket-woven base that extends up two feet, ensuring guests that they have some privacy. Lightweight, hydrophobic fabric also protects them from rain, and mosquito nets line the interior of the cabin. Two people can rest comfortably in separate areas or, alternatively, the space can be combined into one large bed.
In addition to the sleeping pods, Cole Company’s project includes an elevated bamboo and timber observation deck. Suspended between several trees, guests would have fantastic views of wildlife – the conservation area is one of the last places where tigers roam in Southeast Asia. It would definitely be a trip that visitors wouldn’t soon forget.
