Amnesty International Freedom Candles are a set of limited edition candles, designed by Mark Landwehr & Sven Waschk of Coarse, that were developed as a fundraiser for Amnesty International. Each of the three candles represents an injustice that Amnesty International continues to fight against. As the candles melt, the injustice disintegrates before our eyes and a more positive story is revealed underneath the wax in the form of a solid bronze cast.
Each candle was sculpted in 3D and then poured and molded by hand. Stop Torture features a man kneeling on the ground, head down, hands bound behind his back but, as it burns away, reveals the same man being reunited with his son. Arms Trade Treaty features a military rifle standing on its base but burns away to reveal a pen signing the world’s first global Arms Trade Treaty. And finally, My Body My Rights features a young girl being forced into sexual slavery and burns away to reveal a young girl who is free to make her own choices.
The candles are currently being auctioned off through eBay, with auctions ending every hour for 30 hours on April 26, 2014. All of the proceeds will go to Amnesty International to fight all of the injustices that take place every day throughout the world. The candles are meant to send a positive message that, “Together we can light the way for change.”
