With a focus on sustainability, the automotive industry has shifted gears in the last few years. From Vespa to Volkswagen, many major brands now offer electric versions of their tried-and-true vehicles. The latest car company to race toward this eco-friendly finish line is MINI, whose recently revealed Classic MINI Electric has appealed to car lovers and environmentalists alike.
Unveiled in an event leading up to the New York Auto Show, the Classic MINI Electric puts a contemporary spin on the familiar favorite. With its signature white roof and bonnet stripe, the car appears to be an authentic, older vehicle—which is exactly what it is. Rather than start from scratch, the British brand decided to retrofit an existing car with an electric motor, battery pack, and charging port. This upcycled approach culminates in a model with a process as eco-friendly as its design, and it demonstrates MINI’s “appetite for purely electric driving.”
Though you won’t be seeing the Classic MINI Electric on the road this year, the company expects to roll out the zero-emissions vehicles in 2019. Just in time for the classic Mini’s 60th anniversary, the new model will honor the “charisma, individual style, and driving fun” of the original favorite.
