My Modern Shop Spotlight #9 – The Wizard of Oz by Christian Jackson

From powerful photography to hilarious designs, we’ve featured the works of countless dedicated photographers and imaginative artists. Now, prints and canvases of some of today’s best contemporary artists are available through My Modern Shop. As part of our ongoing series of spotlights for the shop, we’re reintroducing our readers to the fantastic works available. This week, we bring you The Wizard of Oz by Christian Jackson.

Inspired by his own initiation into fatherhood, Jackson began illustrating children’s stories. In this particular piece, the graphic designer’s cleverly minimalist illustration presents a whimsical interpretation of The Wizard of Oz. It offers an interpretive rendering of each thing that the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Lion requested–a heart, a brain, and… courage. In a past interview, the artist told us, “In the story, the Cowardly Lion was the only one who requested something intangible. So, I had to make it tangible. Coincidentally, it worked out in the overall balance of the design to use an upside-down heart. It still makes me laugh.”

This print is currently available through My Modern Shop.
