Whether he’s shooting Half Dome at Yosemite National Park or Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland, photographer Chris Burkard always finds a way to make us step back and appreciate the awe-struck beauty of the world. According to Slate, Burkard’s recent trip to Iceland had him carrying a Lytro Illum, a camera that can capture “live” 3-D photos. He’s no stranger to Iceland, having first worked in the country in 2008 on assignment for Men’s Journal when he photographed surfer Timmy Turner.

In many of his photos he shows a tiny person surrounded by a grand scene. Oftentimes, a surfer stands alone. As he states on his 500px page, “With ocean as his main muse, Burkard has consistently captured this subject in timeless and expansive photographic impressions, utilizing the tool of surfing to approach the ocean’s intricate personality and then extending out to include the human personalities that draw meaning from this same source. Searching for wild, remote destinations and offbeat landscapes, Burkard portrays the humble placement of the human in contrast to nature.”
