The winners of the 2017 B&W Child Photo Competition have been announced, marking the end of the fourth year of the contest. As one of the biggest international photography competitions, talented photographers from all over the world enter each year with their depictions of childhood. The winning black and white photos are chosen from four different categories—Portrait, Lifestyle, Fine Art, and Documentary—twice-yearly with “First Half “and “Second Half” winners, as well as the overall Grand Winner.

The Grand Winner title went to British photographer Paulina Duczman, who received numerous prizes, as well as honorable mentions in all categories. Her ethereal fine art portraits of young girls are completely captivating, and capture the beauty and purity of her subjects. One of the competition’s judges, Marko Nadj announced Duczman as the winner by simply saying, “It’s obvious that Paulina has mastered every essential aspect of photography.”

When Duczman heard the good news, she announced on Facebook that she had been crying “happy and very emotional tears” for a solid two hours. Overjoyed, the talented photographer revealed that she has been working for the past three years to turn her passion into a career. Revealing that black and white photography is what she loves the most, she said, “Getting recognition for my work…for my visions…around the whole world is indescribable.”

Other winners include Kinga Drazek, who won 1st place in the Portrait category for her image titled Fear. It depicts a little girl in a garden, with her eyes closed and her hands over her ears. To some, the nostalgic image might tell the story of playing hide and seek, or an imaginary game. Russian photographer Elena Rusinova won 1st place in the Lifestyle category, with Weekdays, an image of a young boy lying on a bed, watching his sister put on makeup. Whether they won 1st prize, or an honorable mention, all of the enchanting black and white photographs capture the magic of childhood and the journey of growing up.

The fifth annual competition is now open for submissions. If you think you have what it takes, the deadline for The First Half is on 1st July 2018. Find out more via the B&W Child website.
