Whether it’s glittering galaxy glazes or adorable animal-inspired icing designs, it’s evident that donuts make the perfect shaped canvas for food-inspired artists around the world. Influenced by his time spent living in the United States, South Korean ceramicist Jae Yong Kim creates delectable donut designs inspired by pop culture and famous artworks. They may look good enough to eat, but are for display only. The realistic pastries are actually hand-sculpted from clay, painted and glazed, and often adorned with glitter and Swarovski crystals.
References to modern art has been a continuous theme for Kim, who has hand-sculpted hundreds of ceramic donuts glazed in brightly colored patterns. From Roy Lichtenstein-esque polka dots, to Jackson Pollock-inspired splattered paint and swirls, Kim views each donut as a “small painting.” Each piece can take days to create, with the glazing process requiring three or four firings in the kiln to achieve the glossy finish. Kim’s donuts have been exhibited in galleries and art fairs all over the world, such as Art Miami, where he presented Homage to Kusama—a collection of donuts decorated in Yayoi Kusama’s iconic yellow and black patterns.
