Announcing the arrival of a new little bundle of joy is an exciting event for all new parents. To make the milestone even more memorable, freelance designers and “creative lovebirds” Jacques and Lise have created a series of adorable unfolding birth announcements that put a playful spin on the traditional greeting card.
Reminiscent of an interactive pop-up book, each card cleverly reveals a hidden scene through a simple folding technique. When closed, each paper creation depicts life before baby; a couple kisses, another rides a bicycle built for two, and a very pregnant mother-to-be shows off her baby bump. Once unfolded, however, each image magically transforms before the recipient’s eyes. In between the puckered-up pair appears a baby nursery; the tandem bicycle now fits a whole family; and the pregnant woman’s belly becomes a buggy. Specially designed for real-life couples, the one-of-a-kind announcements are a precious way to welcome new additions.
On top of emulating the old-school pop-up book design, Jacques and Lise also look to the past in order to find inspiration for their vintage-inspired illustrations and general approach to the craft. “Our nostalgia towards childhood and the difficulty of letting go of something and to throw it away, this makes us collectors of a various mishmash of things,” they admit. “It [is these] things – collected during city trips, flea markets or saved from destruction – that continue to inspire us to create. This results in a wide mix of artwork and different styles. Constantly on the search – but in a determined way – to keep on trying to surprise people with our work.”
