How funny would it be to come across a hitchhiking lawn chair looking for a ride to the garbage dump? Thanks to designer Bert Leschner, we can all say we’ve seen this unusual, yet hilarious, visual. In his Monobloc series, the inventive artist produces a number of quirky creations out of ordinary lawn chairs. The affordable and lightweight seats are reworked to display a new and humorous sense of personality.
Using heat as his primary tool, Leschner manages to redesign the most commonly used plastic chairs into a cast of comical characters. They’re anthropomorphized, transforming their armrests into arms with actual gripping hands. Rather than simply being a seat on a swing, the chair doubles as the swinger clutching onto the rope it’s affixed to and going for a playful ride. There’s even an instance in which the seat takes a seat!
