Magical Scenes Sculpted with Chicken Wire

London-based artist Benedetta Ubaldini uses an interesting medium to craft a variety of three dimensional sculptures. Each hand-sculpted animal and figure is skillfully built using chicken wire. The artist says, “The simplicity of this material contains the magical power of transparency that is capable of giving each piece the lightness of an apparition, a ghostlike quality, like a trace from a memory.”

The transparent, overlapping figures form whimsical and unexpected scenes that you might see in a children’s storybook. Ubaldini shapes the permeable material into giant rabbits, hot pink pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and floating clouds that fill a gallery space. She experiments with colors and lighting to produce installations that, she says, “give a sense of wonder and magic,” and awaken the imagination in all of us.
