Sydney-based artist Ben Young is back with his latest collection of hand-cut, layered glass sculptures inspired by the ocean. Like his previous pieces, his new sculptures illustrate the beauty of the sea through translucent waves crafted in combination with rocky grottos, palm trees, drifting boats, waterside homes, and tiny figures on the shore.
To construct his breathtaking works of art, the self-taught sculptor, surfer, and boatbuilder goes through a complex planning process in which he sketches concepts, creates plans, constructs models, draws templates, and makes custom jigs before cutting layers of clear sheet float glass to be laminated into solid seascapes. Lighting is essential for bringing the final forms to life, as it can make or break the illusion of space, movement, and depth in each stunning piece.
Young’s newest sculptures can currently be seen in Melbourne at Kirra Galleries, where they are on display as part of the Floating exhibition along with the glass works of artist Peter Nilsson through August 23.
