Abstract Sculptures Look Like Unraveled Faces

Sculptor Barbara Leoniak creates intriguingly abstract perspectives of the human face. Her milky white sculptures, made of cardboard dipped in resin, appear to be one long sheet of paper or fabric that was molded around the faces of people, but somehow came unraveled and frozen in space and time. Each figurative work in the skilled sculptor’s collection includes several closed-eyed faces that are either about to kiss or appear to be in a tranquil state.

Leoniak’s contemporary sculptures were recently presented in an exhibition titled Disclosures as an accompaniment to Polish artist Anna Ostoya’s paintings. The three-dimensional reinterpretations reflect the paintings’ figurative presentations with an element of abstraction. There is an inexplicable sense of opposition and balance. The sculptures also exhibit a sense of continuity as one follows the path from one face to the next, only to repeat the cycle over and over. The artist creates a relationship between them in this way, playing with themes of interconnectivity.
