With an emphasis on “character design and pattern exploration,” Becky Kemp of Sketch.Ink crafts quirky products that blur the line between fun toys and fine art. While her whimsical approach to design is evident in all of her delightful creations, it plays a particularly big role in her collection of artist-inspired Kokeshi dolls.
This charming line of figurines features a trio of modern and contemporary art‘s most well-known artists: installation expert Yayoi Kusama, Pop Art pioneer Andy Warhol, and abstract master Piet Mondrian. Kemp has designed the dolls with minimalism in mind—an aesthetic decision that both honors the age-old Kokeshi craft and characterizes her signature style.
Though simplified, the wooden toys feature the distinctive quirks of the famous figures. Yayoi Kusama, a figure known for her eye-catching style, sports her iconic red bob and is clad in polka-dots. On the other side of the spectrum, Andy Warhol wears a simple striped shirt tucked into his famous blue jeans. And, believing that the artist “is essentially a channel,” a bespectacled Piet Mondrian dons a blazer decorated with his own De Stijl designs.
Though they stand just six inches tall, these Kokeshi capture the larger-than-life spirits of the iconic artists. You can find this trio and more in the My Modern Met Store.
