In order “to bring art history to the public in innovative ways,” Canadian company Today is Art Day has created a line of art-inspired action figures. Based on real life artists, these adorably and accurately designed dolls include a fun Frida Kahlo figurine and a tiny toy van Gogh. Now, in addition to this pair of modern artists, Today is Art Day has added some older models to the mix with their new Leonardo da Vinci, Vermeer, and Rembrandt action figures.
Like the Kahlo and Van Gogh figurines, each Old Master measures 5 inches in height and comes equipped with an easel and teeny-tiny reproductions of his well-known works. Much like Kahlo’s surrealist heart and Van Gogh’s detachable ear, each new action figure comes with clever and quirky attributes.
On top of his sketchbook, quill pen, and detachable hat, Da Vinci has a glow-in-the-dark beard, “so when you turn the lights off, you can still feel the presence of the Renaissance man.” Similarly, Vermeer comes with a removable cap, as well as three pearl earrings: a miniature one in his hand, and a synthetic pair for you wear. Lastly, in homage to his signature self-portraits, the Rembrandt doll is dressed in the artist’s characteristic beret and cape. He also comes with a creatively customizable face, allowing you to capture the Dutch master’s most well-known expressions.
To fund this trio of toys, Today is Art Day has launched a Kickstarter campaign. While the popular project has already surpassed its $40,000 goal, various donations will still result in rewards. For a $23.50 pledge, you’ll get one doll of your choice. For $47.50, you’re awarded a combination of two toys. And, for $71, you can get the entire tiny trio. What a steal!
