Artist Paints Carpets as Though a Body is Hidden Underneath

Created by Spanish artist Antonio Santin, this series of oil paintings on canvas features a collection of silhouetted bodies laying underneath ornate carpets. Much of Santin’s work evokes a haunting sense of morbidity and, in this case, the mysterious presence beneath the carpets will send chills down your spine. Most often, the figures are simple lumps creating shadows on the surface of the material. However, in some cases, the glimpse of a single eye peering out from the floor will make you jump in your seat!

The New York-based artist paints in large format so that the intricate elements and patterns can be observed in great detail. Though he says that his paintings have no conscious message, the underlying tone of his work expresses a desire to discover what is hidden or concealed. He considers these paintings as still life work and, though he does produce human shapes, he leaves it up to the viewer to create associations of life or death beneath the carpets. When asked why he chooses to paint bodies under such exquisite designs, Santin says, “It’s an invitation to remind people that this is a painting. I like playing with this sublime and sinister combo. What’s inside, what’s underneath? I believe there are many layers of entertainment. It’s high-class entertainment.”
