Seventeen-year-old Instagrammer Annelies van Overbeek poses for self-portraits in the glamorous garb of decades past, presenting herself as a convincing look-alike for legendary ladies of yesteryear. One particular icon first inspired the ongoing project—Audrey Hepburn. Two years ago, van Overbeek got a pixie-style haircut that revealed her uncanny resemblance to the cinematic superstar. Van Overbeek says she slowly “became really obsessed with her” and began dressing up in costumes inspired by Hepburn’s classic roles, from Jo in Funny Face to Ann in Roman Holiday—and the rest is history. Literally. Van Overbeek has now taken on roles that range from 1920s flappers to women of the Edwardian era, all with impeccable period-appropriate style.
To create the different looks, van Overbeek mixes authentic vintage clothing and accessories—including some pieces passed down from her grandmother—with items sourced from contemporary stores like Primark and H&M. She doesn’t use Photoshop or even a fancy camera—every photo is shot on her iPhone 6s.
With creativity, attention to detail, and a remarkable range of facial expressions, van Overbeek models as Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind, complete with a coyly raised eyebrow; a black-and-white Anne Frank, seated with a journal; Johannes Vermeer’s painted Girl with a Pearl Earring; and a dazzling Snow White and Belle alike. She makes just as believable a Daisy Buchanan as Carey Mulligan, and she portrays Audrey Horne of Twin Peaks with equal panache to that of actress Sherilyn Fenn. Prepare yourself for double-takes and déjà vu as you sift through the images below.
