Photographer Alison Scarpulla makes images that are faint combinations of reality and mystery, almost like a dream. Her hauntingly experimental photographs are formed through double exposures and various developing methods in the darkroom. Her use of desaturated colors and grainy, expired film add to the mystery of this magical world.
There is an eerie sense of energy that emanates from each image, leaving her viewers with a reminder of mortality and a ghostly shudder. In an interview, she said, “The Victorian spiritualism movement and the photos that came out of it really inspire me, and I just can’t get enough of photographs from the 1800s to early 1900s.”
