Artists Use Flowers to Turn Sharply Painted Faces into Beautifully Surreal Art

Photographer Alexander Khokhlov continues to mesmerize viewers with his optical illusions created in-camera through the power of makeup. This time he also challenges himself by transforming subjects’ faces with real flowers. In collaboration with makeup artist Veronica Ershova and hairstylist Mikhail Kravchenko, Khokhlov has developed the captivating project titled Bloomshapes. Similar to his Weird Beauty portraits, Kohokhlov’s flower-filled series focuses on minimalism and extraordinary illusions, heightened with expertly applied makeup.

The talented team recreated Newton’s Cradle and morphed a subject’s face into an egg yolk, utilizing the model’s face as their unconventional canvas. While Ershova’s painted faces are exceptional, it’s Kravchenko’s floral hair designs that take this project to another level. Every image in the series is filled with multiple, fascinating layers. Between the vivid makeup, visually stimulating arrangements, intentional simplicity, and colorful blossoms, there’s something eye-catching in each shot that will make viewers do a double take.
