Dark and Moody Zoo Animal Portraits by Alex Teuscher

Geneva-based photographer Alex Teuscher shows us the fine art of zoo animals with these dark and moody portraits. He originally came up with the idea when he was going through his old files of animal photos and felt like something was missing. “I decided to experiment and see what kind of results I could get,” he tells us. “What I ended up with I found quite unique and gave me quite a different view of the animals. I decided to create a series around this look.”

Teuscher mysteriously leaves out any trace of the animals’ surroundings by focusing solely on their facial features – an owl’s intense eyes, a baboon’s bristling forehead, a white tiger’s prominent nose. What’s left are fascinating views of well-known creatures we’ll most likely never see this up close.

When asked what he hopes others get out of this series, he tells us this: “I hope that people recognize the majesty and beauty of these animals. Via the internet and social media networks, it’s become much easier to get your images out there, and hopefully, touch someone with the magnificence of these animals.”
