Mysterious Photos of Venice Cloaked in Darkness

Dark Venice is a series by Toronto-based photographer Alessandro Cancian that presents the Italian city of Venice cloaked in darkness. The intriguing landscapes we often see in the light of day are suddenly veiled by overpowering shadows. The dark aesthetic makes the stunning architecture barely visible, thereby forcing the viewer to look all the harder. It is ironically bringing focus to the Italian landscape more by filtering its visibility.

Cancian’s beautiful series is both romantic and eerie, adding what the photographer calls “a layer of ‘Angels & Demons’” to the City of Water. The minimal peeks of light complement the deep, dusky halls of unlit plazas and empty streets. The architecture gracefully adds its own accent to each image, playing with hints of natural light and casting its own shadows.
