It has been three years since photographer Albert Dros last visited Greenland, but the passage of time hasn’t changed the country’s beauty. Dros just came back from a month in Disko Bay, where he photographed red sailboats amidst icebergs, as well as the surrounding countryside. In doing so, he gives us a wide-ranging perspective on the oft-photographed bay.
As in his first expedition, Dros set out with Iceland Photo Tours. Started by photographers Daniel Kordan and Iurie Belegurschi, the tour group uses red sailboats to get around the bay, making for some iconic photographs as the colorful sails pop against the ice. While the sails feature prominently in Dros’ photo collection, it was important for him to also focus on other sides of Disko Bay, so there are plenty of images of the surrounding villages as well.
On this second trip to Greenland, Dros had the pleasure of experiencing the midnight sun. This period when the Sun never sets below the horizon makes for a sky that dazzles with brilliant color. When Dros was lucky enough to catch a break in the weather, the water would become so calm that the reflection of the sky made for a memorable photograph.
Interestingly, this time around, Dros experienced weather that was much more variable than during his first visit. Calm moments were few and far between, with fog, rain, and wind settling in. Fortunately, the landscape is so beautiful that this weather didn’t put a damper on Dros’ photography. If anything, it gave him a chance to show off the environment in a new, unexpected manner.
