Airbnb accommodations often afford you experiences that conventional hotels can lack. The home-sharing site offers a full immersion in the local culture, and they’re taking this idea to another level with a once-in-a-lifetime competition. In the fall of 2018, four lucky winners (and their chosen guests) will have the chance to enjoy the Great Wall of China by themselves for one magical night. Considering that this UNESCO World Heritage Site receives more than 27,000 visitors a day, having 13,000 miles of relative alone time sounds absolutely spectacular.
Airbnb has crafted a custom-designed home that sits on the wall and features a cozy bedroom, living space, and an elegant dining area—all under the stars. But in addition to the decor, cultural education is heavily emphasized. As a guest, you will take a short hike to your bedroom on the wall. Once the sun begins to set, you’re fed a multi-course gourmet meal, where each course represents a different aspect of Chinese culture and its culinary traditions. “Consider it,” the Airbnb listing explains, “a historic (delicious) lesson in the Great Wall’s history.” As you dine, a traditional Chinese concert will play just for you. The stay ends the next day with a sunrise hike and a calligraphy lesson.
This competition is done in tandem with the Beijing Tourism Development Committee as a way to “promote sustainable tourism to China by spotlighting wide-ranging efforts to preserve the Wall’s deep heritage and bring Chinese culture to life.” To enter to win this experience, you must write, in 550 characters or less, why you consider it important break down cultural barriers and how you would use this time at the Great Wall to build new connections.
You have until August 11 to enter on the Airbnb website. If you’re chosen, your trip takes place between September 4 and September 8, 2018.
