Aakash Nihalani is Back with More Playful Tape Illusions

New York-based artist Aakash Nihalani is a master with tape and uses it to create eye-catching optical illusions. We’re already big fans of his clever street art, and we are enjoying the pieces he’s installed indoors for a new solo exhibition entitled Vantage. Like previous works, Nihalani uses the magic of perspective to delightfully fool our eyes into believing that his geometric structures have a three-dimensional appearance.

Vantage includes a sculpture that spans a doorway, creating “holes” in the walls where a colorful yellow bar passes from side to side. Other smaller works incorporate the installation of simple white platforms that are threaded with vibrant combinations of blues, reds, and greens. And in a piece that’s larger-than-life, Nihalani creates the illusion of a passageway where zippered walls open to reveal a calming blue background.

Vantage is currently on view at Wunderkammern in Roma, Italy. If you have the opportunity, check it out until May 17th of this year.
