Modern Architecture – Reaching Toward the Heavens (6 pics)

Yesterday, we looked at Asymptote’s “Dream Hub” proposal for the Yongsan International Business District of Seoul, South Korea. Today, we take a look at another awesome proposal that was shortlisted for the same project, this time by London-based architecture firm Foster + Partners.

Foster + Partners wanted to transform the area from a large railway goods yard into a new, exciting modern metropolis. The current site is predominantly inaccessible, so the architects wanted to resolve this by creating a new heart for the city.

The proposal is Inspired by the Sam-Taeguk, an icon derived from the Taoist idea of Ying and Yang. The main focal point of the hub are the landmark towers which form the Sam-Taeguk. Known as the “Helixia”, the three spiraling towers will give new focus and meaning to Yongsan by connecting three diverse areas together: the Yongsan Station, the Han River, and the Yongsan Electronics District.
