Movie on the Radar (Part II): The Girlfriend Experience

Another interesting movie is on the horizon, this one called The Girlfriend Experience, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The premise? Chelsea (real life porn star Sasha Grey) is an upscale Manhattan call girl who provides more than just a sexual encounter; for a price, she’ll simulate a complete romantic relationship–a girlfriend “experience.” Despite a wide variety of happy customers, Chelsea wants to expand her business. Her real boyfriend Chris is a personal trainer at a downtown gym who seeks his own level of success. Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election, “The Girlfriend Experience” follows the life of Chelsea for five days as she meets people she might not have been supposed to meet. What’s most interesting about this film? That it gives a sneak peek inside a world most of us know very little about. (Or so I hope, hubster.) Also, this will mark the debut of porn star Sasha Grey into mainstream media – perhaps a Cinderella story (or at least Pretty Woman) in the making. The movie had a surprise premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and has so far been getting good reviews. Magnolia Pictures will premiere “The Girlfriend Experience” On Demand April 30 and will release it in theaters in LA & NY Friday, May 22. Read more about the movie at Monsters & Critics
