Tired of the classic square-shaped puzzles? Maybe it’s time to try something new. The innovative designers at Nervous System create unique puzzles in cool shapes inspired by the animal kingdom. From ancient fossils to adorable cats, you’re sure to find a new jigsaw to work on in your spare time.
The Nautilus Puzzle is based on the whorled shell of a nautilus, which is a cephalopod related to octopi and squid. Instead of starting from the exterior and working inwards as you would in standard puzzles, the spiral design of this jigsaw merges the edge with the interior pieces to make it a tricky challenge for even the most experienced jigsaw enthusiasts. This shell puzzle is made up of 306 maze-style pieces that are laser-cut to ensure that they are unique, organic shapes. Among them are five cephalopod-shaped pieces, and one special seahorse piece. Similarly, the Ammonite Puzzle is inspired by an ancient fossil and contains 117 dentrite-style pieces as well as two ammonite “whimsies.”
Nervous System also has a puzzle for those who are fond of felines. The Herding Cats Puzzle is inspired by the phrase of the same name which is used to describe an impossible task. While it may look daunting, this challenge is completely feasible. Featuring colorful artwork by designer and scientist Anne Sullivan, this feline-shaped puzzle contains 224 laser-cut pieces, including 43 “whimsy” pieces that are carved in the shapes of playful kitties. As you put the puzzle together, you’ll find cats leaping, stretching, sleeping, or just being adorable.
