This year has not been very kind to the wedding industry. As a result of the pandemic, many couples have had to kiss their dream weddings goodbye in favor of more intimate ceremonies in order to meet the requirements of public health restrictions (or those of their own conscience). Still, it has forced people to view their impending nuptials in a different light and get creative with how they celebrate their special day. It was no different for Emily Bugg and Billy Lewis, who opted to marry at City Hall when it was apparent that their original hopes for a large fall wedding wouldn’t be viable because of the pandemic.
With their well-laid plains now set aside, the couple looked for ways to make the best of their situation. In the end, they decided to use their $5,000 catering deposit to provide Thanksgiving meals for clients of Thresholds, a nonprofit where Bugg is a staff member. The organization offers assistance to those with mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders.
Thresholds usually hosts a Thanksgiving gathering for those of their clients who are in need, but they were also forced to cancel this activity due to gathering restrictions. Thanks to Bugg and Lewis’ generous donation, the nonprofit was still able to provide 200 meals. Staff members joined with the caterer, Big Delicious Planet, to box and hand-deliver each individual meal to clients’ homes.
“In the grand scheme of things, canceling a big wedding isn’t the worst thing that could happen,” Bugg remarks. “We’re happy to be married, and we’re so happy that we could help Thresholds’ clients feel the connection of a Thanksgiving meal as a result of the wedding cancellation.”
The couple’s wedding venue, Salvage One, has also agreed to put their deposit towards a good cause, planning to use it for a future event for the Epilepsy Foundation. This couple’s generosity has already positively impacted hundreds and will surely continue to inspire others to make the best of challenging circumstances and put a little more good in the world.
