In recent years, LEGO has introduced several art-inspired sets designed for adults, allowing fans to recreate iconic paintings using LEGO bricks. There’s a set based on Hokusai’s The Great Wave and another that allows you to assemble Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. And now, art history fans can also bring Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers to life, brick by brick.
The Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set was designed in close collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The 2,615-piece set allows anyone to create their own 3D sunflower artwork, complete with 16 sunflowers, adjustable petals, a removable frame, a tile with Van Gogh’s signature, and a hook for display.
Van Gogh painted five large canvases of sunflowers in a vase, using just three shades of yellow—“and nothing else.” Through this bold experiment, he demonstrated that a painting could be both rich and expressive, even when composed entirely of variations of a single color. Similarly, the LEGO set relies on a limited palette of bricks. Despite being made of plastic, the completed build manages to capture the painterly charm of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers from 1888-89.
“Working on one of the world’s most famous paintings can be quite daunting, but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream come true,” says the LEGO set’s designer, Stijn Oom. “We collaborated closely with the Van Gogh Museum and its experts, delving into the details to meticulously craft a 3D version of the original artwork.”
The designer adds, “One of the most challenging yet crucial aspects was translating the impasto effect into LEGO bricks while preserving the painting’s asymmetrical yet balanced composition. We are incredibly proud of the result and hope our fans enjoy building it as much as we enjoyed bringing Van Gogh’s masterpiece to life.”
Rob Groot, managing director of the Van Gogh Museum, shared his excitement that a piece from the museum’s permanent collection has now been brought to life in a LEGO set. “It was wonderful to see how LEGO Group and the experts of our museum have collaborated with such attention to detail and appreciation for the original artwork,” he said in a statement. “We hope this LEGO set will inspire and engage new audiences with the art and life story of Vincent van Gogh.”
As you build the set, you can also listen to an accompanying podcast by LEGO and the Van Gogh Museum, featuring Senior Curator Nienke Bakker and LEGO Designer Stijn Oom. Available starting March 1, 2025 on LEGO.com, YouTube, and Spotify, the podcast explores the collaboration behind the set and the story behind Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings.
The LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is now available for pre-order now, and is due to ship on March 1, 2025. Find out more about this incredible product on the LEGO website.
