If visiting Japan is at the top of your bucket list, traveling by train is one of the best ways to see the sights. And if you’re tight for time, Japan’s epic shinkansen rail network allows you to pack as much as possible into just a few days. Travel photographer Naohiro Yako recently took the high-speed train to Kyoto and Nara, spending just 20 hours in the former capitals. The Japanese would refer to this as a “dangan tour” (or “bullet tour”)—it’s a term used to imply a very quick trip taken to a foreign place, and with a lot of fun packed into it.

Despite the quick visit, Yako still managed to capture the incredible scenes during the height of fall. A popular must-see destination for many travelers, Nara park is home to hundreds of wild deer who roam freely. Yako’s breathtaking photos show the beautiful animals walking among the park’s grounds, where famous temples are seen covered in a blanket of red autumn leaves. In Kyoto, Yako captured some of the city’s classical Buddhist temples, as well as the stunning surrounding gardens, full of vibrant red and orange foliage.
