Swedish illustrator Josefine Svärd creates fantastical stippling art that captures the beauty of nature. Celestial skies, trees, mountains, and wild animals are composed of millions of tiny hand-drawn dots, bringing them to life in intricate detail. Many of the artist’s scenes are framed within hand-drawn geometric frames, but often feature elements such as rivers and trees that seem to spill out and grow from the confines of their entrapping lines.
Black forest trees and inky night skies contrast sharply against craggy mountains and campfire smoke, illustrating the magic of adventures in the great outdoors. While some of Svärd’s works come from her own imagination, others illustrate scenes from famous epic fantasy tales. Fans of Lord of the Rings will instantly recognize Svärd’s monochrome renditions of Rivendell, The Shire, The Argonath, and The Two Towers. And Harry Potter buffs will appreciate the dedicated artist’s illustrations of the Hogwarts Express and the wizarding houses—Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor.
Each drawing is rendered dot-by-dot in black ink, a meditative process that clearly requires tremendous patience. Svärd has openly talked about her struggles with mental health on Instagram, explaining that being creative helps with her anxiety. Now with over 70,000 Instagram followers, Svärd is proof that hard work and persistence pays off. “I’m stunned. I try to understand how this is happening but I don’t come up with anything,” she writes. “This is just something I did because I loved to create and to ease my anxiety…I can’t believe I can celebrate another milestone like this. I am forever grateful, and so thankful for the amazing support I get from you every day.”
