One of the most iconic painters in history, Vincent van Gogh painted almost 900 masterpieces during his lifetime. The pioneering Post-Impressionist focused on a range of subjects, including self-portraits, wheat fields, flowers, and the starry night sky—all of which were rendered in his distinct, thick painterly brushstrokes. Fans of Van Gogh can now admire his mastery of the canvas and study how his style developed over time with a new wall chart from Curious Charts.
Created by Timothy Sanders and his wife Aurélia, the Visual Taxonomy of Van Gogh is organized by subject matter. Taking three months to complete, Sanders started out by organizing Van Gogh’s works into categories in an Excel spreadsheet. Sanders reveals, “To figure out how to fit the images on a single poster size sheet, I had to map out a solution that would both be exciting for people to explore but would also show the impact of what Van Gogh accomplished.”
The wall chart includes Van Gogh’s 38 self-portraits, 42 paintings of wheat fields, 70 flower paintings, 85 portraits of women, and 44 portraits of men. Each piece is neatly packed into the 24-inch-by-36-inch poster, complete with labels detailing the artwork title and date.
You can find out more about the project on Kickstarter, where it was recently fully funded.
