Miami-based street artist Hoxxoh (born Douglas Hoekzema) is known for his hypnotic and hyper-colorful murals. We first discovered his kaleidoscopic tableaux in 2015, but his newer work seems to take on new dimensions: the undulating circles of paint appear like layered gears, luring passersby into deep, tunneled portals towards alternate realities.
Hoxxoh’s latest piece transforms an ordinary wall outside Fort Works Art, a Texas gallery where he’ll be part of the 9 Grams group show that opens on Saturday, August 6th. The exhibit features international artists with bold attention to color and abstract designs, exploring the way that today’s common visual vocabulary revolves around Instagram and other social media. Hoxxoh’s contribution is, indeed, very Instagram-worthy: his fiery outer rings of red and yellow morph to electric blue circles that sink back into the blackened brick, beckoning viewers to a mysterious abyss.
Aside from its representation of the show’s overall theme, the optical illusion seems to be symbolic of the Hoxxoh’s cerebral approach to time. In his artist’s statement, he explains that he hopes to convey the tugs of gravity, “expressing how we can be pulled in one direction, when we are really meant to be going in another…Where if we follow the natural flow of time’s predetermined, yet unseen path, an experience of beauty and pure form will take shape.”
