Carl Schneider is a Whitney Achievement Elementary school teacher who wants to ensure that his students are secure both inside and outside of the classroom. Along with fellow teachers Kevin Sullivan, Auriel Rolle-Polk, Allison Thompson, and Valeria Bostick, Schneider walks his students home and makes sure that they all arrive safely. “We can just get to know the kids and talk about what they did over the weekend or how their behavior was at school that day or what they learned,” he told Fox13, after mentioning that he’s been participating in this program for three years. “This is just part of my routine, and it’s something that I look forward to. At the same time, I’m also really glad that people know the teachers in this community are really invested in the community.”
Since there are about 200 students who live a short distance from the school, the five teachers divide the kids into groups based on where they live. They’ve been doing this voluntarily from the start. “One of the things we realized immediately was the safety of our students was priority No. 1, and connecting with the community is right up there with that,” Chris Hill, the Achievement School District’s director of communications, told TODAY. “The kids love it, and they even request certain teachers, and we’ve been learning that the teachers thoroughly enjoy connecting with the students.”
