Spectacular Light Installations Stun Visitors at Sydney’s MCA

Following a sold out show at London’s Hayward Gallery and record attendances at the Auckland Art Gallery, Light Show comes to Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). From April 16 to July 5, visitors to the MCA will get to experience 19 installation from the 1960s to the present day by major international artists. The show’s premise is light as a sculptural medium and it features the works of such highly acclaimed artists such as James Turrell, Ivan Navarro, and Leo Villareal. As MCA Director, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE said, ‘Light Show offers an extraordinary audience experience. There are works that bathe visitors in changing light or immerse them in environments that play with perception. Some invite interaction, others pulse and flicker in hypnotic ways.”

Some notable works include Carlos Cruz-Diez Chromosaturation, a stunning three room installation with 60 hidden fluorescent tubes and Anthony McCall, You and I, Horizontal, a pitch black room with a projector, haze machine and a 50 minute computerized loop that transforms light from a dancing haze to a mesmerizing sculpture. Also at the MCA is Luminous, an exhibition of light works by Australian artists such as Jonathan Jones, Peter Kennedy, and Sandra Selig. Jones’ installation, called Naa (To See or Look), is a newly commissioned piece and it consists of fluorescent lights arranged to form the beautiful star trails of Sydney’s south-eastern night sky.

Some Instagrammers were invited to the press preview of Light Show where they were able to snap some early photos of the upcoming exhibition. Many of them also made their way to Luminous, to capture Jones’ dazzling work.
