Artist Helen Ahpornsiri’s intricate collages are made from a variety of pressed ferns foraged from the English countryside. Inspired by her surroundings, the Sussex resident gathers ferns, dries them out and arranges them in beautiful configurations. With her delicate touch, hundreds of leaves turn into the magnificent wings of a moth or the spindly legs of a beetle.
Ahpornsiri uses natural materials to create pictures of other shapes from the natural world, including images of a bird, sea horse and butterfly. Part of the intrigue of her work is the sheer variety. She skillfully chooses ferns across a spectrum of colors, textures and patterns, arranging them in surprising configurations to achieve stunning results. The artist actively shares photos of her most recently completed creations on her Instagram account and sells original designs and prints via Etsy.
