Breaking the Surface is a collaborative installation created by Kontur, Abida, Intek, Scandinavian Design Group, and Ctrl+N to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Norwegian oil company Lundin Norway. The installation combines design with advanced sensor technologies that provide an interactive experience for visitors. Spanning two levels, it can be viewed both from above and from below “the surface” in an abstract representation of the geological world below sea level.
In the piece, rows and rows of acrylic plastic undulate overhead like ocean waves to create a soothing experience of motion and light. As visitors walk through the piece, they will feel the energy of gliding movements as sensors recognize and respond to their presence and create a pathway for walking.
“The installation is based on inspiration from geological models, while referring through its movements to Lundin Norway’s exploration activities,” explains the Scandinavian Design Group. “Lundins six most important discoveries are presented as crystals within encapsulated oil drops, containing actual oil samples from the individual wells.”
