Artist Sophia Narrett uses needle and thread to create stunning, embroidered narratives. Rich in color and texture, her works have a unique, painterly quality. Individual threads combine to form organic masses that flow throughout the image and off the frame in beautiful drips and swirls. Exploring each carefully stitched detail is like having a sensory overload, as the viewer becomes lost in an intriguing world that almost appears three-dimensional in its depth.
Narrett, who has an extensive background in oil painting, says that she stumbled upon embroidery by chance. “I was experimenting with some embroidery thread for sculptures when I became attracted to the luminescence of the thread itself,” she explains in an interview with SPACE Gallery. “The set palette, the linear quality and the inherent color separation of the thread all seemed like interesting parameters for image making, and since my work has always been driven by narrative images it made sense to try rendering scenes with the thread.”
