Rather than clearing out nature and altering the landscape, architect Keisuke Kawaguchi + K2 Design developed this contemporary home that works in harmony with the trees. Located near Yonago City, Japan, Residence in Daisen is a seemingly fragmented home placed around, next to, and throughout the existing forest.
The interior is connected with short passageways and the living space is set on the second floor to allow for the most comfort during all seasons. Residents avoid the moisture and heat that rise up from the ground in the summer and stay warmer in the winter during the average 6.5 feet of snowfall each year.
Surrounded by cherry and pine trees, the variously shaped rooftops allow maximum sunlight to stream into the home. “Trunks reach towards the sky with bountiful leaves. The figures of the trees are beautiful. They are the legitimate habitants of the forest,” says architect Keisuke Kawaguchi.
