Christian Strmqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth of PINPIN Studio have developed a brand new room for the famed ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjrvi, Sweden called It’s Alive! The room, made entirely out of ice and snow, is designed in the likeness of a mad scientist’s laboratory la Frankenstein. Being their third venture in creating an ice room, the duo have maintained their sense of whimsy, allowing guests to playfully imagine their own scenario in the space.
Strmqvist tells us, “We want the visitor to feel like they are stepping into an adventure, on to a stage. We make the scenography, but the visitors act or play. So this year, we wanted to follow our theme of making an interactive suite that works in the same way. And we started to feel that we had this old 30’s, 40’s, 50’s horror/adventure movie theme going on in all our suites, so what was missing? Well, Frankenstein. We also felt that it would be really interesting to interpret that exaggerated black and white scenography from the old movie in snow and ice. And it was!”
The designer adds, “What we hope is that the visitors will not be scared, but instead be willing to play along and take the part as either the scientist or the monster. Neither are featured in the room, so it’s up to the visitors to give life to them. We want the visitors to have an adventure. Their stay in our room should be a playful and unique experience.”
The ICEHOTEL is now open, featuring the It’s Alive! art suite, through April 22, 2014.
