In approximately two weeks, My Modern Met will be on the ground in Calgary, covering one of the most exciting art+science+engineering events to ever take place. Beakerhead is an annual, citywide, interactive movement that brings together brilliant minds in the fields of art, science and engineering to one place for five spectacular days, September 11-15, 2013. It is sure to become a staple in Calgary’s cultural calendar.
At the first annual Beakerhead, there is a plethora of fascinating events. The main one is called The Tremendous and Curious World of Beakerhead and it’s described as “a most unusual theatrical adventure, sure to draw in lovers of outer space, music, comedy, and surprises.” It will feature a performance by world-renowned astronaut Chris Hadfield, former Commander of the International Space Station, among other science superstars.
In direct partnership with Beakerhead, My Modern Met will be leading the press coverage. We’ll be live-blogging at the event, taking photos and videos to give you, our readers, a first-hand experience as if you were there with us.
Because there are so many awesome events taking place during the five days, below, we’ve only highlighted a few that stood out from the rest. You can also view Beakerhead’s full 2013 calendar, here.
The Tremendous and Curious World of Beakerhead – What happens when you fill a room with a musical astronaut, a robot band, an opera singer, movie-making robots, and the neuroscientist who wrote This is Your Brain on Music? Take a trip you will never forget through a tremendous and curious world, at the junction of science, engineering and culture.
Speakerhead on Frequency Painting – Immerse yourself in artist Gary Joynes’ 12 TONES: an iconic Cymatic sound wave sculpture and interactive sound composition environment that explores the relationship between sound waves and their visual counterpart. The exhibition, curated in partnership with EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, offers a portal to escape the world of the everyday. No two participants ever have the same sonic experience.
The Making of Mondo Spider – One lucky Calgary school will be paid a visit by Mondo Spider, a massive mechanical spider, and its eatART creators for a lesson in imagination and invention like no other!
i-ROBOT Theatre – i-ROBOT Theatre is an original play by Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre that integrates cutting-edge technology to create a live sci-fi performance. With quick-witted writing, jaw-dropping puppets and, above all, lots of robots, it asks big questions about identity, autonomy and humanity.
Sustainival – Sustainival is the world’s first green carnival and midway, powering rides and amusements on vegetable oil, wind, solar, and other forms of renewable energy. Ride the Zipper, Gravitron, Super Swings and more, while also taking in entertainment on a pedal-powered stage, green carnival games, art cars and food trucks!
“Beakerhead brings together two crucial sectors in our community – engineering and culture – which share creativity, innovation and the Calgary spirit.” – Mayor Naheed Nenshi
