Wunderblock is an exhibition of unusually constructed work by Berlin-based artist Katharina Grosse. Grosse is well known for merging interior spaces and objects to produce vibrant displays of vivid colors. She uses spray paints because she finds them less restricting and because they allow for a wider range of creation than a simple, traditional canvas. This installation, currently on display at the Nasher Sculpture Center in downtown Dallas, most prominently features a large space covered with huge mounds of dirt that are spray-painted with a rainbow of colors. Visitors are actually invited to walk into, on, and around the mounds and to fully interact with the art work.
In addition to the mounds of dirt that blend architecture with artificially altered natural soil, Grosse also produced sculptural and painted pieces for the exhibition. On display in the upper level of the gallery is a large carved and painted sculpture made out of styrofoam; in the garden, visitors can appreciate the two large painted forms made out of glass-fiber reinforced plastic; and on the lower level, a painting will be created by Grosse while onsite.
