Nature is full of surprises. Nick Castro, the owner of California-based company Nick’s Extreme Pest Control sees many strange incidences in his line of work. But even he was shocked by what he discovered inside the walls of a client’s house in Santa Rosa. What was supposed to be a routine visit to address damage caused by a woodpecker resulted in the uncovering of a stash of thousands (if not millions) of acorns.
Woodpeckers—who use their beaks to excavate tree trunks—are known to peck holes into the siding of houses. Castro was called to address such a situation and fully expected to find some acorns inside the walls of the house that the bird had stowed away. What he didn’t anticipate was a flood of nuts to pour out of the opening he created in the wall.
“They just kept coming and coming, nonstop,” Castro said. “Acorns were thought to be only about a quarter of the way up the wall. Turned out, they were piled high up to the attic of the house.” The full amount of acorns ended up being 700 pounds in total, filling eight large trash bags. “I never saw anything like that before,” he added.
After retrieving all of the nuts, Castro tended to the damage done to the house by adding vinyl siding to it and patching the holes, in the hopes of deterring the woodpecker from returning. Hopefully, this will help the bird find a more appropriate place to store its food so its hard work doesn’t go to waste in the future.
