Expectant parents are often eager to meet their child, treasuring their ultrasound until the bundle of joy’s arrival. Now, a company called 3D Babies is offering excited parents-in-waiting a three-dimensional replica of their unborn fetus in the womb. The customized models, which are created through 3D printing technology, use 3D/4D ultrasound images to recreate each customer’s baby, reflecting his/her facial features and body positions.
As the parents of a 3-year-old and 1-year-old, San Francisco-based owners Gerard and Katie Bassette say, “We love being parents and have been cherishing our time with our girls. Every time another family member or friend has a baby, we are reminded of our first few months with our girls. More importantly, we are reminded of how much we have forgotten about that time. In an attempt to hold on to those memories, we created a way to make a 3D figurine of what our baby looked like at that time.”
While some have really taken to the idea of creating a fetal replica of their kids, the project has been met with criticism. One could argue that there’s little difference between documenting their child in a picture or a sculpture, yet others still find it just a bit too creepy. What do you think–creepy or cool?
